BUTTERFLY UMBRELLA

Umbrella, Acrylic paint

2012

In Chinese culture when standing under a umbrella, there is a saying that a ghost also stands next to you; sharing the umbrella.

The butterfly is also a symbol of a deceased soul. However, two butterflies seen together or two people under a umbrella is symbol of a loving couple.

Having the butterflies stuck in a spiders web represents life, love and death. With it over shadowing each and every one of us.

The holes also expresses the concern of the modern design of cities. Due to there hard surfaces and impenetrable concrete, water is no longer able to seep down into the ground to replenish ground water.

Instead it washes down the drains and gets flushed out to the ocean without the beneficial nutrients obtained from the ground.
